A little while back I got to visit a new Thai street food restaurant on their opening night in Guildford, Surrey. Thaikhun Guildford is part of the growing chain which now boast an impressive 9 restaurants. I took along my sister and best friend to try out the place; having both been to Thailand and are huge fans of Thai street food I thought they were the perfect guests to accompany me. We were greeted on arrival with funky cocktails in take away style boxes and welcomed in Thai which was a unique touch. Don’t worry though as all the staff had t-shirts with the basics printed on them so you could understand and respond if you wished to. We were then shown through to our seats.

And we walked though the ‘street-style’ restaurant I felt a real buzz in the atmosphere and was instantly transported to warmer climates and got a real feel for how I imagined certain places in Thailand could be. My accompanying Thailand pros were able to verify this for me so the place really does do the job!

We were given a mix of dishes to try out, oour mixed platter starter consisted of sticky pork, spring rolls, vegetable bites, prawns and other nibble sized bites. For our main courses we also had a range of dishes to sample; this included tofu pad Thai (a personal fave of mine), spicy rice & mince, green Thai chicken curry, various styles of rice, spicy belly pork plus a whole host of other delights!

I really really enjoyed every single bite, it was my first experience of tofu and although I probably wouldn’t order something tofu based in a restaurant it was actually very tasty and it was nice to try something a little different to my usual choices. The tofu was definitely a lot lighter than eating a meat based pad Thai.

We all polished off every single dish we were given to try so I think that is a success all round. We then each tried a different cocktail and again these were all well made and a perfect way to wash down the meal.

I would thoroughly recommend Thaikhun as it’s not your standard Thai eatery. The street food element adds another level and gives you dishes you may not find in a traditional Thai restaurant. It’s a vibrant atmosphere and that really added to the whole experience. Like my previous restaurant review I would probabaly suggest this is a place to visit with a group of at least 3 people to ensure you can get a wide range of dishes to share and try a bit of each. This is just the way I like to eat, obviously each person is different, I just think it’s a nicer way to have a real mix of flavours on your plate.
